OUR ROOTS GO DEEP

The Daily Transcript at SDDT.com traces its roots back to the National City Record, which began publishing September 28, 1882. The name evolved through a succession of owners, becoming The Daily Transcript in 1886.

In 1909, the Superior Court declared the paper, “A newspaper of general circulation published for the dissemination of local and telegraphic news and intelligence of a general character.” Later it became the official newspaper of the City of San Diego. The 1920s saw the evolution of the Transcript into a true business publication and the masthead boldly proclaimed it “The Business Newspaper of Southwestern California.”

 REVELLES CONTINUE TRADITION

The Daily Transcript at SDDT.com continues to report on San Diego business news and events under its current owners, the Revelle-Scripps family, a family with a long history of involvement in San Diego land development, business and philanthropic ventures. The family-owned company – CALCOMCO – acquired the newspaper in 1986.

 Ellen C. Revelle, publisher emerita until her death in May 2009, was the granddaughter of James E. Scripps, founder of The Detroit News, and the grandniece of E.W. Scripps, who established the Scripps Howard newspaper chain. Her husband Roger Revelle, a prominent scientist and oceanographer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, was instrumental in bringing the University of California to San Diego. Their son William Revelle continues to serve as chairman today.

 SAN DIEGO SOURCE

Under Revelle’s leadership, and publisher Robert L. Loomis’ direction, The Daily Transcript launched the San Diego Source at SDDT.com in 1994 – to provide online all it had provided for so many years in print, plus much more uniquely suited to the new technology. The Transcript was the first newspaper in Southern California to publish on the World Wide Web.

 Since 1994, the San Diego Source has developed into one of the Internet’s most successful local sites. Originally free, the site is now a paid subscription site attracting over 6.6 million unique visitors annually. As an information destination on the Internet, The Daily Transcript ranks among top national media sites while maintaining its local business focus in Southern California.

Smarter Small Business coaching and consulting was founded in January 2006 by Colm Kelly after identifying a need to assist busy business owners to do business smarter.  Today, the Carlsbad-based company has served over 200 clients ranging from one-person businesses to small companies with 1-30 employees.

In 1952, few could have imagined the rural flower fields and avocado orchards of Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Vista would grow into the major population and commerce centers they are today. From its beginnings in 1957, Tri-City Medical Center has mirrored that growth. Today, it is a nationally recognized hospital with a world-renowned medical and professional staff, state-of-the art technology, and highly rated, compassionate patient care.  

Tri-City Medical Center has received numerous national and regional accreditations.  Tri-City is Gold Seal approved by the Joint Commission, meeting the national standards for healthcare quality. It is the first nationally accredited Chest Pain Center in San Diego County and is a San Diego County Designated Heart Attack (STEMI) Receiving Center.  It has received the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers and the Silver Achievement Award for Stroke Care from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.  

Tri-City is home to nationally certified Pulmonary and Cardiac Rehabilitation Centers accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. The American College of Radiology awarded national certification to the radiology center. And, the US Department of Health and Human Services awarded the hospital its Silver Medal of Honor for excellence in organ donation and procurement. 

In 2008, the hospital opened the Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine with certified physicians, nurses, and technicians. The medical director is the only nationally certified wound specialist in San Diego County and one of only three statewide.  

Tri-City offers a wide array of quality programs ranging from maternity and advanced neonatal services, orthopedics, neurology, to advanced interventional radiology with state-of-the-art imaging equipment like the 64-Slice Lightspeed CT Scanner. In total, Tri-City has over 500 physicians representing 60 specialties and sub-specialties.  

One of the most exciting recent technological additions is the CyberKnife – a revolutionary radiosurgery system that lets doctors treat tumors anywhere in the body, even those once characterized as inoperable.  

In 2009, Tri-City began a bedside bar-coding initiative, which has been shown to reduce medication errors by more than 80%.

Tri-City has the second busiest emergency room in the county treating about 70,000 residents annually. It remains at the forefront in planning for regional disaster response and in recent disasters served as a community medical receiving center for ill and injured patients. 

While it’s important to treat those who are ill, it is equally important to continuously improve the quality of life for those who are healthy. Tri-City Medical Center’s new Tri-City Wellness Center in Carlsbad approaches health and fitness from a medical perspective. The 50,000 sq. ft. facility offers a complete array of health and fitness programs.
